In a discussion elsewhere, some misguided, unreconstructed Manly Man started on about the loss of traditional masculinuckledraggery, including the Divine Right Of Man to leave the toilet seat up.)  I heard the voice in my head, and it was too late to do a thing about it…

The toilet seat. He knew it was up. His head rang: in his mind, he heard the voice.

His wife. Unhappy. Again.

It was a good seat: bakelite, solid. A seat with heart. A seat like that would give a hard clunk when you put it back down.

He did, then went to wash his hands. Hard. With soap, then a rough towel to follow.
