It’s like Grand Central Station of critters here tonight. Firstly, the ants outside the studio door have set up a combination highway/airport, then the dog starts going completely crazy at a box I brought in earlier, to move some books around.

Fear this

I raced over in case it was a snake or something else deadly, only to find our old mate the Pobblebonk. I hadn’t seen him about since September when I trod on him in the dark.

Late Edit: He’s a Naked Tree Frog.

Pobble was a bit the worse for wear, having picked up a lot of fluff and dust from under the book boxes, so I washed him down in a plastic crate before releasing him back up near the roof downpipe of the house.

Here’s a couple of quick photos taken before I released him.

De-fluffing the rare Hairy Frog

The Attenborough place? Reference to this man, who seems at home with beasties of all kinds.

The colours don’t do him a lot of justice in those shots: he’s more like this in real life…
Pobble in another of his hiding-places.

Late Edit: More on Pobblebonks here, including WAV file of their call. Hey, our Pobble is LOUDER than that by heaps!

He’s gorgeous. I got the Attenborough reference. I’m a big fan.

He is a fine specimen of a frog, no doubt, and his voice is disproportionately big.

I’ll pop a reference link to the Qld Museum’s page with a WAV in the body of the post.

we have them at my work. people rarely see them, just hear them. we get asked all the time about where is the speaker. people think they are fake. one guy was convinced he found the trigger that made the sound. sheesh. when I manage to catch one so people can see the frog, they are always amazed such a tiny thing can make such a big noise

you stepped on the poor froggy. yikes

    wow… I managed actually sentances

Looking at the little freckles on Pobble, I think he’s the same frog I find in the patio, and relocate fairly often.

Yes, I trod on him, but I didn’t put my whole weight down (bare foot on a frog is not a fun experience) and he got away pretty quickly.

    Is Pobble a cane toad?

  6. ryno says:

Not a cane toad… Looking further for an image to show you, I discovered Pobble *ain’t* a Pobblebonk after all!

He’s a (http://www.qm.qld.gov.au/features/frogs/common_nakedtreefrog.asp) Naked Tree Frog. Herself will be surprised.
