I have developed a half-arsed linguistic theory: Lebanese food (or what passes for it in this country anyway) is onomatopoeically named.

Let’s try a few examples:

Sound of sword leaving scabbard = “shish” + Sound of lamb about to be grilled = “ke-BAAb“.

Shish! Have at you, food!plus.jpgDoner-turi te salutamus

Sound of sword leaving scabbard = “shish” + Sound of startled chicken doomed to be skewered = “ta-wook

Shish! Have at you, food!plus.jpgFowl play was suspected

With a bit of a stretch, bubbling some eggplant and other stuff in a pot, then pouring it out as one sudden, sloppy mass could result in “Baba Ganoush“. It probably helps if you avoid Shawerma.

Or then again, I could be a bit unhinged.
