This is a Kevin Andrews

Australian Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews seems to have plenty of dirt to spill on recently-released detainee Doctor Haneef in this ABC news story.

Still, one could retain an air of healthy skepticism.

He says in the conversation, Dr Haneef’s brother says, “nothing has been found out about you”, “have you got permission to leave work?” and “tell them you have a newborn daughter”.

Mr Andrews also says, in the conversation, which took place the day before Dr Haneef tried to leave Australia, the doctor’s brother asks, “when are you getting out?” To which Dr Haneef replied, “today.

Identifiable targets for xenophobia

For a start, one wonders whether Haneef and his brother did The Right Thing like all the aliens in Star Trek, and conversed among themselves in English. One has seen what can be done with a little tweaking of transliteration and emphasis when bringing a text with other cultural referents and syntax into English, and one definitely wonders.

That’s before one even gets to wondering about the actual context of the chat.

“If you give me six lines written by the most honest man, I will find something in them to hang him.” — Cardinal Richelieu (1585-1642).

Now, your humble bloggist will confess to being every bit as bad as those nasty people who discriminate against People Who Look Different.

I have judged a man on his appearance and found that I suspect him of falsehood. Kevin’s Wiki entry says his birthdate is 9 November 1955. That makes him older than me. My hair is almost completely grey or white.

How many 52-year-old men do you know with hair that is naturally black and shiny as a stormtrooper’s jackboot? I think we need to get to the roots of many matters here…

Blackening more than reputations?
